Know before you go

Small things that make a good walk

Dress for the old town

Stone Town is a mostly Muslim, conservative community. Cover shoulders and knees in the lanes; swimwear stays at the beach.

During Ramadan

Avoid eating or drinking in the street in daylight. Evenings come alive, and the waterfront is busier than ever after sunset.

Photographs

Ask before you photograph people, and inside homes and mosques. Doors and rooftops are fair game.

Heat and timing

The lanes are shaded but still at midday. Walk early or after four, and carry water.

Getting here

Stone Town is about 15 minutes by car from the airport. Ferries from Dar es Salaam dock at the port, a short walk from the Old Dispensary.

Money

Carry small notes in Tanzanian shillings for the market and street food. US dollars are widely accepted for tours.

Can we go inside the House of Wonders?

Not at the moment. Part of the building collapsed in December 2020 during restoration work, and it is closed while it is rebuilt. You can still see the façade and clock tower from Forodhani Gardens, and our Waterfront walk tells its story.

How long are the walks, and how far?

Between two and three hours, covering one to one and a half kilometres. There are stops for shade, coffee and questions. Pace is set by the slowest walker, always.

Are the walks suitable for children or limited mobility?

Children are welcome and under-12s walk free. The lanes are narrow, uneven and busy with scooters, so for limited mobility we suggest a private walk that we shape around you.

What happens if it rains?

Short showers rarely stop a walk; we shelter in a doorway and carry on. If heavy rain is forecast, we will offer to move your walk to another time at no cost.

About Milango

A door is the first thing a house says

In Stone Town the door came first. Carved frame, a verse on the lintel, brass bosses if the family could afford them. We built our walks the same way: one threshold at a time, with the people who live behind them.

Our guides grew up in Shangani, Malindi and Mkunazini. They know which courtyard has the best light at four and where the coffee is poured at dusk.
